Link Popularity, Is It Really That Important?

Building Links Is Far More Important Than Anything Else In SEO!
Link Popularity, Is It Really That Important?

I have been receiving e-mails from my readers asking me why we don’t talk about on-site optimization that much. Why we have been focusing on link popularity, and other off site techniques rather than telling you about Title tags, Page Headers, Keyword Density, and such. So I decided to create this post explaining why on-page optimization is far less important than simply creating one-way inbound links!

Fact: Many websites receive qualified search engine traffic due to link popularity alone. Most Flash-based websites are unable or unwilling to have any on-page criteria, and link development is often their only option.

So the question is, do flash based websites get ranked #1 on Google, Yahoo, Msn, and the other major search engines for highly competitive keywords & phrases?

Well let me show you a website that is currently ranking for one of the most competitive keywords that I know of with absolutely no relevance, no text, and a few internal links!

Search the keyword “SEO” in Google, it”normally” stands for Search Engine Optimization and it receives 5,000,000 global searches on Google alone per month! The competition is unheard of but yet this site “www.seo-usa.org” ranks #7 in Google, #10 in Yahoo, and #6 in Msn for this highly competitive keyword that is worth nothing to them!

The site in question “www.seo-usa.org” has the title “SEO Home” no real text, a couple internal links, and some graphics! Now you tell me, why does it rank so high in the major search engines? There is nothing there! It is obviously outranking sites that are far more relevant! Sites that have been optimized to the tee, or getting destroyed by this irrelevant web page!

So Why?

Wait for it….

Strong One-Way Inbound Links!

That’s right this site is for “Sponsors for Educational Opportunity” or SEO! So when sites linked to them they used the anchor text “SEO” and that is the only reason they are ranking so high for a search term that millions of other webmasters would love to have!

So a site that wasn’t even trying to compete for a very popular search term is dominating search results due to strong one-way links, and you can be too! So get out there and start creating links to your website now!

Agree with you that in bound links are or should I say could be really powerful, But on page search engine optimization is pretty useful too
  • That is true and if seo-usa.org had used on-page factors such as text and a better title they would be ranking for keywords that are actually useful to their cause!
  • Wow, impressive, all those great SEOs can't really do anything about natural links. ;-)

One way link building is much more important than onsite SEO. However, doing both is important. Vertical Measures has done a video series for onsite SEO Tips, like the ones you hinted at at the beginning of your article.
  • Hello Ravm, thanks for posting the informative videos. I believe that people will get a lot out of this useful resource!
  • Yeah that's 100% true some still think on-page is 75% of SEO but its not some SEO Companies make 10000.... of links and make the clients sites on a high rank.
  • Well I believe that on-page factors such as titles, descriptions, headers, internal links, and such are still rather important. But I do believe that this post proves that people will do better to build links rather than continuously tweaking their on-page factors.

It's simple just perform extensive keyword research, optimize your pages with original content, create a strong title, description, headers, interlink your pages contextually, and then build as many quality links as possible using the proper keywords/phrases as the anchor text.

But you are right! It is by all means possible to get a page ranked high in the SERPs "Search Engine Results Pages" through link building alone.
  • I also agree that links are important, however, one should take extreme care where they get those linsk from, many an amateur will go off and spam their neighbourhoods belieiving that if thye get a ton of links then wayy hayyy they will start popping up on engines, this is not the case. Google now haver the "nofollow" tag and you are not really supposed to buy links anymore. I focus on on page optimisation and good content, the links then come of their own accord. My blog was spammed this morning by an amateur who was clearly just going for links, but all in the wrong manner!
  • I agree completely! Your links should never come from link farms or other bad neighborhoods and on-site seo is also important to make sure that your site ranks for the keywords desired.

To get around the "nofollow" attribute there are several directories you can submit to, and if your into blogging I recommend that you try our "dofollow search engine" you can find it in the sidebar listed under "free seo tools".

B.T.W. Thanks for the great comment!
  • Thanks for the reply, I had many typos I noticed - oops!

I have a client who has been subscribed to link farms prior to me taking over, now I aminto getting rid of them!
  • I'm a newbie at SEO and I'm trying to do a link building job for someone. What can you do if your site is just not interesting to the general public? (like Geeky stuffs, etc.).

  • That is a really good question. I suggest reading "The Ultimate Free Semi-Automatic Link Building Post" it will provide free tools for you to use in your link building campaign!

    Hi,

    Nice post on "Link Popularity"
  • Glad you enjoyed it!
  • What I find really annoying are flash websites that are higher on Google than HTML/PHP websites with actual good content...
